Creating a MySQL database and user

Updated 1 month ago 15 views

Most website software (WordPress, forums, shops) needs a database. Creating one is a three-step job: make the database, make a user, and connect them.

Steps

  1. Log in to your control panel.
  2. Open MySQL Manager.
  3. Create the database — enter a name and click Create Database. The final name may be prefixed with your account name (e.g. youracct_wordpress); use that full name later.
  4. Create a user — enter a username and a strong password, and click Create User. Note the full username (it may be prefixed too).
  5. Connect the user to the database — choose the user and the database, grant All Privileges, and add them.

What to give your software

When an installer asks for database details, enter:

  • Database name — the full name from step 3.
  • Database user — the full username from step 4.
  • Password — the user's password.
  • Host — localhost.

Keep these somewhere safe; you will need them again if you move or reinstall the site.
