Backing up your website

Updated 1 month ago 14 views

Keeping your own backups means you can recover quickly from a mistake, a bad update or a hack — without depending on anyone else.

The quickest full backup

  1. Log in to your control panel.
  2. Open File Manager, go to public_html, select everything, and use Compress to make a .zip.
  3. Download that zip to your own computer.
  4. If your site uses a database, also export it — see Managing your database with phpMyAdmin.

A website is usually its files plus its database, so keep both together and dated.

Restoring

  • Files — upload your zip into public_html and extract it.
  • Database — import your .sql file in phpMyAdmin.

Our backups

We also keep our own daily off-site backups of your account as a safety net. If something goes wrong and you do not have your own copy, open a support ticket — tell us roughly when the site was last good and we will help restore it.

Good habit

Take a fresh backup before any big change: a theme or plugin update, a new install, or editing core files. It is far easier than undoing a problem afterwards.
